Questions and answers
What is Jzur?
Jzur (جذور, “roots”) is a knowledge and learning project that helps people understand the vocabulary of the Quran through the Arabic roots of its words. It builds connected knowledge about Quranic words, their roots, forms, meanings, contexts and relationships, and turns it into apps, tools and learning experiences.
What is a Quranic root, and why learn words through their roots?
In Arabic most words are built from a root of usually three letters. The root ع ل م (ʿ-l-m), for example, gives ʿalima (to know), ʿālim (scholar), maʿlūm (known) and taʿlīm (teaching). Learning a word through its root shows you its relatives across the Quran and how often and where they occur, so you return to the verse with deeper familiarity.
Does Jzur offer a tafsir (interpretation) of the Quran?
No. In Jzur the root is a tool for organising and learning vocabulary, not an independent interpretation of a verse. The root does not give the tafsir, but it helps you ask a sharper question.
What is the Al-Quran Al-Munir app?
Al-Quran Al-Munir (القرآن المنير) is Jzur's main app: the complete Mushaf, the roots of its words and their meanings, learning and review journeys, games and badges, on phones and computers. It is available on iOS, Android and Windows, and the app is in Arabic.
What other Jzur apps are there?
Three small phone apps, each one part of Al-Quran Al-Munir on its own: Jzur Games (Quranic crosswords, the roots circle, the letter matrix and more), Learning Cards (a new root every day with spaced review) and Roots Explorer (letter wheels that reveal roots).
How many Quranic roots does Jzur cover?
About 1,650 Quranic roots. About 238 high-frequency roots cover roughly 77% of word occurrences in the Quran, according to the project's statistics.
Are the Jzur apps free?
The apps are free to download, with optional subscriptions that unlock the full learning features. See the terms of use at jzur.org/terms-of-use.
Who is behind Jzur?
Jzur is a project of Soumo Lab LLC (soumo.org). Kaleemo (kalimoo.com), a tool for Arabic teachers that is in development, also comes from Jzur.
